The Fort Thomas Police Department has issued a warning about a new scam targeting travelers as spring approaches. The scam involves text messages that falsely claim recipients have unpaid toll fees, urging them to provide sensitive information like credit card details to resolve the issue.
These fraudulent messages threaten additional penalties if the supposed fees are not paid promptly. They include a payment link leading to a website that imitates an official toll authority site but is not legitimate.
Authorities emphasize that no toll authority in the United States communicates through text messages. Notifications regarding unpaid tolls are typically sent via traditional mail or email. Drivers who suspect they may owe toll fees are advised to visit their state's official toll authority website and enter their license plate number to verify any outstanding charges.
"Scammers are sending text messages claiming that recipients have unpaid toll fees and must provide sensitive information, such as credit card details, to settle the charges," authorities warned.
They further stated, "The fraudulent messages threaten additional penalties if the supposed fees are not paid immediately."
Authorities urge caution and recommend verifying any claims of unpaid tolls directly with official sources.
